Counselling & Therapy for Teenagers
Teen age is a challenging period for both teens themselves and parents due to the changing developmental needs of children as they transit into teen age. Teens juggle with the important task of finding out ‘who they are’ and ‘who they want to be’ as well as learn many skills that are needed for adulthood. It is also a time that they test and challenge many structures that they previously follow as it was set out for them due to their increased cognitive ability. While the symptomatic behaviours may look like those seen in childhood, other challenges may emerge.
Therapy can help:
- To provide a safe space for teens to express themselves freely
- To understand help teens to understand themselves better
- To help teens to express and respond to their needs and others more appropriately
- To build more positive self-image and self-esteem and a sense of confidence
- To improve interpersonal social skills
- To help parents understand what are the needs teens are communicating with their behaviours and to support them
- To provide parents support to improve parent-child relationship and to feel more equipped to respond to their teen’s difficult behaviours
Some symptomatic behaviours:
- Outbursts of emotion (i.e. anger)
- Low mood and motivation
- Hyperactivity
- ‘Defiant’ behaviours
- Sudden change in behaviours
- Addiction to gaming
- Physical pain or discomfort not related to any medical issues
- Self-esteem and self-image issues
- Problems with relationships with peers and adults
- Self-harming behaviours
- Anxiety or depressive moods
At Safe Expanse, on top of talk therapy, we use play, art and other media to help teens understand and express their own feelings and needs. We also believe in the importance of working with parents and other important adults in the teen’s life in the process of helping the teen navigate the challenges of transition into young adulthood.
