Couples Counselling
Professional guidance to strengthen communication and rebuild connection
Relationship counselling is a space for partners to talk through conflict, distance or a loss of trust with a trained therapist who takes neither side. At Safe Expanse our therapists work with couples at every stage — dating, engaged, married or thinking about separating — and with individuals who want to understand the patterns they bring into their relationships.
Couples come in at very different stages — some after a specific conflict, others simply noticing distance building over time.
A counsellor works with both partners together, focusing on communication patterns, unmet needs, and rebuilding the connection both people want.
This may be right for you if...
- The same argument keeps resurfacing without ever really getting resolved
- You feel more like housemates than partners
- One topic — money, intimacy, parenting — always ends in a fight, so you avoid it
- A sense of growing distant, even when nothing dramatic has happened
- You are considering separating but want to genuinely try first
What relationship counselling can help you work on
Most couples do not come in over one dramatic event. More often it is a slow build-up of the same arguments, conversations that feel unsafe to start, or a sense of living parallel lives. Sessions give you room to slow those moments down and look at what is happening underneath them. Common areas couples bring include:
- Communicating without the conversation turning into a fight or a shutdown
- Recurring conflict over money, in-laws, household roles or parenting
- Rebuilding trust after a breach, such as an affair or a hidden debt
- Emotional and physical intimacy that has faded
- Stress from outside the relationship — work, illness, a move or a new baby
- Big transitions, such as moving in together, marriage, or deciding whether to stay together
How sessions work
Your first session is mostly about listening: what brought you in, how each of you sees the problem, and what you would like to be different. From there your therapist suggests a way of working that suits your situation. Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes, in person at our Beach Road office or at Minmed Sanctuary in Novena, or online if that is easier to fit around work and childcare.
Therapists draw on established approaches such as Emotionally Focused Therapy, PREPARE/ENRICH relationship assessment and attachment-based work, adapted to you rather than followed as a script. Couples often work on noticing the cycle they get stuck in, taking turns to be heard, and practising new ways of responding at home between sessions.
Coming on your own
Relationship counselling does not require both partners to attend. If your partner is not ready, or you want to understand your own part in a pattern that repeats across relationships, individual sessions can focus on communication, boundaries, attachment and the choices in front of you. Some people start alone and invite their partner later.
Why couples choose Safe Expanse
We are a small team of counsellors and therapists, so you can keep working with the same therapist throughout rather than being passed between staff. Sessions are confidential and non-judgemental, and couples from different cultures, faiths and family backgrounds are welcome — including expat and mixed-nationality couples adjusting to life in Singapore. If you are not sure whether couples or individual sessions fit best, message us and we will talk it through before you book.
What to expect

Frequently asked questions
When should we see a relationship counsellor? +
Consider it when the same arguments keep repeating, when you avoid certain topics to keep the peace, when trust has been broken, or when you feel distant even without open conflict. You do not need to be in crisis — many couples come in to work on things before they become harder to change.
Do both partners need to attend? +
No. Couples sessions are usually the most direct way to work on a relationship together, but individual sessions can help you understand your own patterns and decide what you want. Some people start on their own and invite their partner later.
Is relationship counselling only for married couples? +
No. We work with dating, engaged and married couples, and with partners who are unsure whether to stay together. Couples preparing for marriage may also be interested in our marriage preparation sessions.
How many sessions will we need? +
It depends on what you are working on and how long it has been building. Some couples come for a handful of sessions around one issue; others prefer longer-term support. Your therapist will review progress with you regularly so you can decide together.
What happens in the first session? +
Your therapist will ask each of you about the relationship, what brought you in and what you would like to change. It is a chance to see whether the therapist is a good fit for you both. Nothing you say is shared outside the session, except where required for safety.
Can we have sessions online? +
Yes. Sessions are available online as well as in person at 37 Beach Road and at Minmed Sanctuary in Novena, so partners can join from home or from different locations.
How much does relationship counselling cost? +
Fees depend on the therapist and session length. Our fees page lists the current rates, and you can message us to confirm the rate for the therapist you would like to see.
